An ecosystem-wide approach for assessing the spatialized cumulative effects of local and global changes on coastal ecosystem functioning

چکیده

Abstract Coastal ecosystems are subjected to an increasing number of anthropogenic drivers, including marine renewable energies and climate change (CC). These drivers can interact in complex ways, which may lead cumulative effects (CEs) whose potential consequences on the need be addressed. We used a holistic approach—ecological network analysis (ENA)—coupled with two-dimensional food web model—Ecospace—to conduct ecosystem study CEs CC plus operation offshore wind farm functioning extended Bay Seine (English Channel). Mapped ENA indices showed that were not restricted area, i.e. where concomitant. varied both space among properties, displaying distinguish between different pathways modify multiple ways. Moreover, seemed tied structuring role CC, differed under 2050 2100 conditions. Such changes resulted stronger loss resilience conditions despite benefits reef reserve farm.

An evolutionary approach to ecosystem functioning.

The more diversified in habits and structure the descendants of our carnivorous animal became, the more places they would be enabled to occupy. What applies to one animal will apply throughout all time to all animals. . . So it will be with plants. It has been experimentally proved, that if a plot of ground be sown with several distinct genera of grasses, a greater number of plants and a greate...

An ecosystem approach to global assessment and management of coastal waters

Since the Rio Summit in 1992 the public has become increasingly aware that coastal ecosystems are under significant threat from poilution, overexploitation, and habitat loss. However, little Progress has been made in sustained global actions to reverse their degraded state. It has been no smail feat for the world cornrnunity to come to agreement on international instruments identifying environm...

1 The Various Effects of Insects on Ecosystem Functioning

Insects represent a dominant component of biodiversity in most terrestrial ecosystems yet they have largely been neglected in studies on the role of biodiversity in nutrient cycling, or, more generally, the functioning of ecosystems. The scarcity of manipulative studies on the role of insects in ecosystem processes contrasts with the expert knowledge and large body of research already available...

Phylogenetic constraints on ecosystem functioning.

There is consensus that biodiversity losses will result in declining ecosystem functioning if species have different functional traits. Phylogenetic diversity has recently been suggested as a predictor of ecosystem functioning because it could approximate the functional complementarity among species. Here we describe an experiment that takes advantage of the rapid evolutionary response of bacte...
